The Approach - Lesson (page 3 of 4)...

The degree of swing and club selection are largely determined by two factors: distance from the green and nature or the terrain. Accordingly, approach conditions call for two types of shots: (1) a lower running shot or (2) a higher lofting shot.

For those which require little height and greater roll to the cup, the lower numbered clubs such as the #4, #5, #6, or #7 irons are used.

Those conditions demanding higher ball trajectory with relatively little roll require the use of irons such as the #8 or #9, pitching or sand wedge to loft the boll over rolling terrain or obstacles that exist between you and the flagstick.
