The Approach - Lesson (page 1 of 4)...

Playing situations often demand a less than full swing. As shots are made approaching the green, direction is the primary goal. to accomplish this you should feel a more compact, controlled action through the upper body while maintaining greater stability in the lower body.

The whole posture of the body is lowered; the stance narrows.
The arms form an inverted triangle with the shoulders as the base. The triangle moves in a more pendular action yet the feel at the ball is crisp.

The length of the back swing varies with the distance required. On the majority of shots, the speed remains as consistent as possible. A simple thought for comparing the length of backswing to the distance produced is to imagine a large clock behind the golfer. The head is at 12:00, the feet or ball at 6:00 (see Fig.) A swing from 7:00 - 5:00 would send the ball approximately 15-20 yards; from 8:00 - 4:00. 20-40 yards; and from 9:00 - 3:00, close to 40-60 yards.
